I stop at this tree every day I ride. It is at the top of a short hill and it is one of my checkpoints, so I always stop and write down my time. These roots are amazing and I am thinking this is a really old tree, based on the roots. I did a search and based on the bark and the shape of the leaves, I think this is a Beech tree. I would love to know how old it is.

Amazing to see so many large roots spread above ground, especially compared to tree in distance with no roots showing. Cool photo.

The word "gnarly" immediately came to mind when I popped onto your blog post today. But the gnarly roots provide an interesting combination of color, texture and composition. I like it!
Thank you both so much for your comments. Those roots are astounding and there is evidence that in the past the roots by the road have been trimmed, but I guess it didn't hurt the tree.
Seeing this large tree made me think of the Buttonball tree in front of Grandma Spencer’s house. It didn’t have all these exposed roots which are amazing. Betsey
