It may be work, it may be play, it may be near, it may be away. So here is the challenge - to shoot and post one photograph a day on this site. These photographs are a kind of diary of things I find interesting. I am also thinking that there will be days when I am unable to shoot, so on those infrequent occasions, I will post a photograph done on another day, but one that still feels important to me. - Ken Spencer

Porch, Dresden, NY
We went on a "field trip" today, headed south to drive around some of the Finger Lakes. It was a beautiful day, and we headed down the west side of Seneca Lake from Geneva. In the distance, I saw the smokestacks of a power plant that I have flown over a number of times, and I was interested in seeing it up close. As we drove around trying to find it, we drove down a dead end street, and past this house. Wow! The first thing I saw was the rocking chair on the porch, so I grabbed my camera and made a shot of just the chair. Then I looked around a bit and saw more of the architectural detail of the porch, the window, and then the statue with the flowers. Double wow! I shot both versions and then had to pick one. It wasn't easy. But I decided the wider shot was the more interesting. Please click on this - I have posted a larger file so you can see more detail.
Love it! Now I want to see the entire house. :-)

Ob, THAT'S the porch I always wanted
ReplyDeleteIf that porch could "speak," I wonder what it has seen... .

I think there was someone living there, and I didn't want to attract any more attention than I already had. We stopped in the middle of the street, and I jumped out, took six photos, and we were gone. Sorry I didn't photograph the whole house. There was a cupola on the top, and some windows were missing, and there was sheet plastic waving in the breeze. I think the house is in bad shape.
ReplyDeleteMy mother has been inside this house when she was in her 20's so in the 70's and she says the artitecture is amazing inside with curved walls and marbled mantled fire places. Beautiful wood floors. She went to the top of the cupulo and said you can see all over the lake, just beautiful. She said when she was upstairs the door at the bottom of the steps to the cupulo slammed shut. She didn't think anything about it. As she didn't believe in haunted houses at the time. But when she thought, I wonder what's in the basement she got goose bumps all over and an errie and cold feeling and left right away. When she went in it was empty but heard the last people left in a hurry with things all in boxes, they didn't even go back to get there things. I'd love to see the inside of this home.

Hello! My name is Jamee Blass.I grew up in Dresden,NY off Seneca lake. The House you took a picture of is called the "Horton House". That was what we called it when we were kids, I'm not sure if that's the actual name. It was our Haunted House and we would tell Ghost stories about it. Silly! Now that I think about it! But I can't believe somebody is fixing it up! When I was little, An old woman owned it but she never did anything with it. I just thought you might be interested to know a little more about it. :)
ReplyDeleteI also grew up in Dresden and have actually been inside this house. It has secret passages that I have seen and stories have been told of slaves being harbored there as part of the underground railroad. It is such a beautiful home and I enjoyed finding your picture of the porch. Thanks for posting it.
