The Old Mocos

I have no idea how long I have had these moccasins. But they are now perfect - they are not shiny and new - they have that perfect, used look to them. When they are brand new, they are actually maroon in color, with white soles. Sounds ugly, right? But these are Sperry Topsiders - the classic boat shoe, and that's how they look. So the trick is to wear them until they look beat up and used. Mine are now that way, but there is a problem... The soles are now kind of shiny, and very slippery. I have used sandpaper on them, and they are a little less slippery, but the bottom line is that I NEED new moccasins. So I will have to start all over, and it will take a long time for my new ones to get broken in, and look as good as these do.

  1. Funny commentary but so true. When you first get them they are stiff and uncomfortable, but you grin and bear it while they break in. Then you enjoy the sweet spot when they are more comfy than sandals. Then they become geriatric and start falling apart, but still oh so comfy. But eventually that sad day does come.

  2. I've had numerous Topsiders over the years too but for the past several years the leather quality has been poor with a shinny finish that looks like it has been sprayed on. Remember the days when boat shoes were made with oiled leather that were salt resistant and where scuffs could be rubbed out with a thumb! Actually, Timberland made exceptionally good boat shoes years ago but they too have gone the way of cheap boat shoe look-a-likes rather than deck performance. What ever happened to the good old days?
