The Fourth of July was always considered the country's birthday, but it is believed that in 1885 a teacher in Wisconsin liked the idea of a holiday just to celebrate our flag. It took a long time until Woodrow Wilson established Flag Day in 1916. But it took until 1949 for President Truman to declare June 14th as "National Flag Day." I tell you all of this, because I got nothin' to say about my picture of the flag! Well, actually I could say I was desperate again, an wondered what I would find, and then wandered onto the porch and saw this.

Flag Day

I listen to the radio and watch TV more than the aveerage person, I think. Today, not one personality mentioned Flag Day. I don't think it's because of a disregard for the flag, but these days, unless people have the day off from work or there are tremendous sales being touted because of the holiday, no one pays attention. I remember when people got into trouble for wearing the Stars & Stripes. Conservatives saw it as disrespectful and wanted the wearers punished. These days, the flag is depicted on all types of merchandise - T-shirts, jackets, pants, bathing suits, surfboards, motorcycles, backpacks. To those who buy this stuff, I say BULLY to you! Wear the flag proudly because we are all so lucky to be citizens of this great country. Yes, we've been hit hard by the recession; people are homeless and jobless and hungry - but that's not anything new. What's new is that there are greater numbers now. But many of us who are in better financial shape, who still have jobs and health insurance, give when we can to try to help those less fortunate in other ways because that's the way the people of this country have operated since the beginning. When I see the flag, I feel tremendous pride because no matter how bad people say it is, no matter how much the politicans blabber on, debating who is at fault (politicans who spend more time pointing fingers than fixing the problems), this is still the best country in the world and everyone worldwide knows when they see our flag, it means USA is in the house! Thanks for the patriotic photo and for the chance to say what we don't say enough: I love my country!

We have much to be thankful for.....
I often get choked up when I look at our American flag. We are so lucky to have our freedom. We can travel wherever and whenever we want. Without fear. Thank you for the info about our flag. bsk
