This theater has a storied history. It hasn't been an active theater for perhaps ten years. When it was on its last legs, there were stories of the husband and wife who stood by the door and looked for contraband food that theatergoers might be bringing in, hidden in their clothes. They were doing so poorly profit-wise, that they needed every dollar they could earn from the candy counter, as well as the ticket revenue. Very sad. So here it sits in a deteriorating building. Who knows what's next.

Nothing like being searched before attending a neighborhood movie. The owners would've been better off (and less offensive) giving away free popcorn -- highly salted -- so people would buy drinks from them. Of course, cheapskates would bring their own and hide that, too. Shame that people have no integrity anymore. The theater looks sad, the neighborhood loses a theater. Now people have to watch their bootlegged DVDs from home.
Latest word is that it had been bought by Cyrus Hakakian of Roslyn, one of four brothers who own Lowe Properties, of New York City and will renovate it into a performing arts center. The building would be renovated so it could accommodate a theater — with dinner theater, comedy shows and touring companies performing Broadway shows — and a movie theater showing second-run and older films. The builder is working out parking space issues that the theater would need with the village and construction is set to begin in the summer of 2009.

a year late but construction has finally started on this project.
