The Dog in the Tree

Last night was the main night for observing the Geminid meteor shower.  That shower is one of the best of the year.  The forecast was for cloudy so I didn't plan on driving out to a dark sky site to see it.  Bad decision.  It was clear for a couple of hours and members of the club saw a bunch of spectacular meteors streaking through the night sky.  So tonight was a possibility for some meteors on the tail end of the shower.  I drove out to Sunken Meadow State Park, and it was really clear.  I only saw one "fireball" which was beautiful.  So then I spent time taking a few photographs.  I thought this photograph of a bright star shining through a tree was really beautiful.  The star is Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.  It is often called the "Dog Star" as the brightest star of Canis Major, the "Great Dog" constellation. Canis Major was classically depicted as the dog of Orion the hunter. Please click on this to see in in more detail.
